As soon as the 2021 NFL season concluded, the NFL madness had just begun. It was almost as if the Los Angeles Rams championship impacted how teams approached the offseason: the draft or free agency. I mean if the Rams could trade for a franchise quarterback in Matthew Stafford, why couldn’t other teams? If the champs pulled the trigger again and traded for a star like Von Miller, why couldn’t other teams too? This new mindset shaped how teams attempted to chase their much-desired Super Bowls.
On March 8, 2022, news broke out that the Seattle Seahawks traded Russel Wilson, perennial Pro Bowler and Super Bowl Champ, to the Denver Broncos in a blockbuster trade. The Broncos were the first to give in to this new formula of trying to win in the National Football League. Whether it will work for them remains a question. However, what does not remain a question, is the way the Broncos giving into the blockbuster trade system led several other teams to pursue and acquire superstars.
Mentioning some of the blockbuster trades, one sees some pretty bold moves. Carson Wentz got traded from the Indianapolis Colts to the Washington Commanders. A top-three wideout, Davante Adams, got shipped off to Las Vegas from Green Bay and the Dolphins were able to surprisingly receive Tryeek Hill from the Chiefs. The Colts were able to avoid their QB situation for another year by trading for Matt Ryan from the Falcons and the Cleveland Browns took a chance on former first-round pick Deshaun Watson in a trade with Houston. But, the madness did not end there as the free agency frenzy had also changed the NFL.
Teams that may not have wanted to give up draft capital to get quality players saved their money for the open market as playmakers were getting signed left and right. These signings and moves around the league made this coming season look a lot different than last season. There was a group of clear-cut top 5 teams last year, but now any star-studded team could miss the playoffs or lose the Super Bowl because the other team just happened to also be loaded with talent.
These new changes have left the rest of the football world shocked. For the first time since I have watched football, almost every team is a true contender. Eleven teams in the AFC (Bills, Dolphins, Colts, Titans, Bengals, Browns, Ravens, Bengals, Chargers, Broncos, Raiders, and Chiefs) all have the potential to contend for a Super Bowl due to how amazing their teams have become because of the wild off-season they’ve had with trades and free agency. These are just the standout teams in the AFC. There is still another conference (NFC) filled with contenders like the Rams, Buccaneers, 49ers, Packers, Saints, and Eagles.
There is no obvious, dominant team to be favored as champions in the upcoming Super Bowl. Organizations and fans will end up being disappointed, as there is a high likelihood that their team will not win the Super Bowl or even make the playoffs because there are simply just too many teams loaded with talent. But, whatever the results are this season, the upcoming season will be the most exciting in recent memory due to all the familiar faces in new places across the NFL. Questions we fans have will begin to get answered as the season progresses.
What do you think was the most impactful trade this offseason?
