Another wild week in the NFL. There have been crazy comebacks, injuries, and unlikely teams looking to surprise fans this season. Here are my three key takeaways from the second week of the 2022-2023 season:
The 49ers will be ok with Lance out
The San Francisco 49ers struggled in week 1 with Trey Lance at the helm. The weather was a factor, so it was hard to judge his performance based off of that game. However, when Jimmy Garoppolo stepped in, the offense looked comfortable and balanced. The Niners have already had success with Jimmy G in years past, making the Super Bowl once and nearly making another last season. I would not be worried for the team, but I would be mildly concerned about their future. The sky is the limit for the former third overall pick, but there hasn’t been a large enough sample size for me to feel content with him leading the team to success like Garoppolo has.
A new hope…in Detroit
After years of disappointment in The Motor City, I don’t know what it is…but, it feels like something special is brewing in Michigan and it isn’t the Michigan Wolverines. Well, maybe an extension of them. Aiden Hutchinson, the second overall pick out of the University of Michigan, set the rookie record for most sacks in a game with three. Once there is new blood, especially a superstar in the making who makes plays, it rubs off on the team. It provides excitement and potential. Not only did he make plays, but the rest of the team did so as well. Amon-Ra St. Brown looked elite, the run game and offensive line looked solid, and Jared Goff exceeded expectations and looked like a solid quarterback. I strongly believe that this team has the capability to make a push for the 7th seed in the playoffs. Dan Campbell and the rest of the staff have been phenomenal and for the first time in my lifetime, I am excited to watch the Lions play and win some games.
The Colts are dysfunctional
After missing the playoffs, Wentz was an easy target to put the blame on. However, after the first 2 games of the season, it may be deeper than the quarterback play. Their coaching has been horrific, Matt Ryan hasn’t been playing well, their defense didn’t play well, and they couldn’t get the run game going against an extremely weak defense. To get completely shut out by a team that has the worst record in the league is embarrassing. They have the potential to be a playoff team and win a very weak AFC South, but they keep finding ways to not just lose, but lose in a horrible fashion.
Bold take from this week: Bills have what it takes to go undefeated
There isn’t too much to say here. Josh Allen and the rest of the team, in every aspect of the game, look unstoppable. They easily defeated the reigning Super Bowl champions, the Rams, and comfortably beat the number one seed from the AFC last year. They held Derrik Henry to less than 1.9 yards per carry and the team to only 7 points. Allen is the clear MVP for now and his connection with Stefon Diggs is the best in the league. I am not saying they will win the Super Bowl, but they obviously have a legitimate shot. They have the best team in the league and I see no one, not even the Kansas City Chiefs, beating this team this season. If they play the way they’ve been playing and the coaches coach the way they have been, the Buffalo Bills…yes, the Buffalo Bills, will win every regular season game.
