History seems to be repeating itself in the Pacific Northwest. Every year, Seattle seems to be rebuilding and they prove the NFL world wrong. They have been able to compete and show that as long as they have general manager, John Schneider, and head coach, Pete Carrol, they will win football games.
The team is filled with young talent. This past offseason, the team was able to extend the contract of 24-year-old superstar receiver, DK Metcalf, and gain six impactful rookie players from this year's draft class. They were able to acquire Charles Cross and Abraham Lucas who are playing exceptionally at left and right tackles which have taken the Seahawks’ offensive line from one of the worst in the league to above average. They also have Tariq Woolen who has 4 interceptions and looks like a top-10 cornerback right now, as well as Coby Bryant who has four forced fumbles and seems to improve every time he steps onto the field. Furthermore, there is a young edge rusher, Boye Mafe, who makes plays that won’t show up on the stat sheet, and Heisman finalist running back, Kenneth Walker III, who has looked explosive and great since taking over for the banged-up Rashaad Penny. Last, but not least, they have guys like Jordyn Brooks, Uchenna Nwosu, and Darrell Taylor who are young and vital pieces to the defense. They have acquired all of this young talent while maintaining the perfect balance of the veteran presence in the locker room with guys like Tyler Lockett, Quandre Diggs, and Al Woods.
It is easy to get caught up in the storylines of Seattle losing Russel Wilson and all of that drama, but it looks like all the dominos are falling in their favor. Geno Smith is playing like a top-10 quarterback right now (maybe even top 5). He is making smart plays, incredible throws, and doing what he needs to do to put his team in a position to win games. If he continues this type of play throughout the season and leads the Seahawks to the playoffs, they may not even need to draft a quarterback next year. With all the draft capital they currently have, the Seahawks can find ways to continue building around Geno. We have seen teams do this in the past, most notably with the 49ers building around Jimmy Garoppolo. And, Geno is better than Jimmy. The Seahawks have a lot of draft capital after what was supposed to be a rebuilding year. But, the “rebuilding year” has turned them into a contender for a playoff spot and a division title. The Seahawks are now in a position to succeed and they aren’t even fully healthy yet. Their team is just getting better and better by the week while they gain experience.
The current state of the Seahawks organization is reminiscent of the early stages of the Legion of Boom era in the early 2010s. If Carrol and Schneider make the right moves, draft well within the next 2 years, and keep their winning culture, I believe the Seattle Seahawks can contend for a Super Bowl once again in the near future. This team has not been talked about enough and I am extremely excited about the new era and what can potentially come of it in Seattle. The question remains: Can the Seahawks capitalize on their fresh start going better than planned?
