Has Daniel Jones Done Enough to Keep His Job?

An overlooked storyline this season has been the resurgence of quarterback, Daniel Jones. He was able to lead a New York Giants team with low expectations to not only a playoff spot, but also a playoff victory. Not to mention, he did this with an injury-riddled wide receiver core who was below average to begin with. Are his efforts and strong play enough to cement himself as a franchise quarterback in the Big Apple though?

The G-men have already taken a leap from a below-average team to a playoff team; however, they are not a team that can compete with the contenders of the league, like the Eagles, 49ers, Chiefs, Bills, and Bengals. In order to achieve that stature of an elite team – believe it or not – the Giants should prioritize an elite, young quarterback this offseason. If they can lock up their franchise cornerstone, running back Saquon Barkley, draft a top wide receiver, and snag a quarterback in the back end of the first round of the draft or potentially trade up for a future rookie like Will Levis, they will set themselves up for an even brighter future. Another option could even be trading for a guy like Trey Lance who has a ton of potential.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Daniel Jones has played well, but I just do not think he is good enough to elevate his team to the next level of play. #nfl #football #team

The Giants' head coach, Brian Daboll, turned Buffalo's Josh Allen, a raw but talented quarterback into what he is today during his time with the Buffalo Bills. But, Daniel Jones lacks the potential to become elite. If the Giants can trade or draft for a quarterback that has the potential to be a star, that can tip the scale to being a competitive team in a run for the Lombardi Trophy. If they can get a guy like Lance, or someone in the draft, Daboll is the perfect coach to take those quarterback’s play to the next level.

Don’t get me wrong, I think Daniel Jones has played well, but I just do not think he is good enough to elevate his team to the next level of play. Usually, it takes a quarterback up to 3 years to mature and live up to their abilities. He is already entering year 5 and has shown no sign of elite play besides his ability to be mobile.

The New York Giants have an exciting future. They have draft capital, money to spend with 54 million dollars in cap space according to PFF, and a phenomenal head coach. Giants general manager, Joe Schein, has a window to make moves and transform his squad from decent to great if they pull the trigger to make a splash at the quarterback position.
